The airport was established in 1932. In January 1, 1991 it was upgraded to an international airport, making it the first such airport in India outside the metropolitan cities. Till the inaugration of the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, the Trivandrum airport carried almost all of the passenger and cargo traffic in Kerala. The volumes have been reduced now. However, the airport remains to be one of India's busiest. It caters to the needs of Kerala and the southern districts of Tamil Nadu state.
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is still Air India's most profit making route and the 25% of the sales comes from here and they don't even have a direct flight to europe but the money come from the gulf sector . The investment from Air India and the owner of the Airport, Airport Authority of India is minimal.
