Taranaki Savings Bank
From Open Encyclopedia
The Taranaki Savings Bank, or as it is now known, TSB Bank, received its first deposit under the banner of 'New Plymouth Savings Bank' on 28 September 1850 from Waitera te Karei. The deposit was 34 pounds. Considering that at the time, the bank's accountant was paid a salary of 20 pounds, the deposit was a considerable sum.
Branches were opened in Fitzroy and Waitara in 1921 and 1946 respectively, followed by the first branch outside the New Plymouth district being opened in Stratford in 1964 combined with a name change to Taranaki Savings Bank.
Today, there are 15 successful TSB Bank branches throughout the Taranaki region, and in 1996 it became, and remains the only, non government, 100% New Zealand-owned bank.
