Stavropol Krai

Stavropol Krai (Russian: <onlyinclude>Ставропо́льский край</onlyinclude>) is a federal subject of Russia (a krai). Its administrative center is the city of Stavropol.

As of February 2004 its governor is Alexander Chernogorov.

Geography

Stavropol Krai encompasses the central part of the Forecaucasus and most of the Northern slopes of Caucasus Major. It borders with Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai, Kalmykia, Dagestan, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia. It belongs to the North Caucasus Econimic Region of the Southern Federal District of Russia.

  1. On 1 January 2007, Evenkia and Taymyria will be merged into Krasnoyarsk Krai.
  2. A referendum is to be held on 16 April 2006 on merging Ust-Orda Buryatia into Irkutsk Oblast. If the result is in favour, the merger will occur on 1 January 2008.
  3. On 1 July 2007, Kamchatka Oblast and Koryakia will be merged to form Kamchatka Krai.
