Southern Federal District

Southern Federal District (Russian: Ю́жный федера́льный о́круг; tr.: Yuzhny federalny okrug) is one of the seven federal districts of Russia. It is located in the extreme southwest, between Ukraine and Kazakhstan. It includes the Forecaucasus and the Russian part of the Caucasus, the North Caucasus. The current Envoy to the Southern District is Dmitry Kozak, a Putin loyalist.

On 1 January 2007, Evenkia and Taymyria will be merged into Krasnoyarsk Krai.
A referendum is to be held on 16 April 2006 on merging Ust-Orda Buryatia into Irkutsk Oblast. If the result is in favour, the merger will occur on 1 January 2008.
On 1 July 2007, Kamchatka Oblast and Koryakia will be merged to form Kamchatka Krai.
