Short tandem repeat
From Open Encyclopedia
A short tandem repeat (STR) in DNA occurs when a pattern of two or more nucleotides is repeated and the repetitions are directly adjacent to each other. The pattern can be of length from 2 to 10 base pairs (bp) (for example (CA)n(TG)n in a genomics region) and the total size must be lower than 100 bp.
Y-STRs (STRs on the Y chromosome) are often used in genealogical DNA testing.
