Sergei Lavrov

Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov (Russian: <onlyinclude>Сергей Викторович Лавров</onlyinclude>, born March 21, 1950, in Moscow) is the Russian Foreign Minister.
In 1972, Lavrov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, and was sent as a Russian diplomat to Sri Lanka and worked there until 1976, then for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 1981, he was sent as a senior adviser to the Soviet Union mission at the United Nations and worked there until 1988. He worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1994, when he returned to the work in the UN, this time as the Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Russia.
On March 9, 2004, Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov appointed Lavrov to the post of Minister for Foreign Affairs. He succeeded Igor Ivanov on the post.
Lavrov speaks, apart from his native Russian, English, French and Sinhala, which he learned during his time in Sri Lanka. He is a passionate guitar player, writes poetry and enjoys rafting [citation needed].
