Rahui
From Open Encyclopedia
In Maori culture, a subset of tapu, placed on a location where a drowning has occurred. The rahui prohibits fishing and swimming in the designated area until the body of the drowning victim has been found and laid to rest, or, if the body is not found, for a period determined by the kaumatua (Maori elders) of the local hapu (a subtribe of the regional iwi).
In the Bay of Plenty area and others, the rahui is observed by Maori and Pakeha alike.
