Occident
From Open Encyclopedia
Occident (English in from the 14th century, via Old French from Latin occidentem (accusative), "sunset, west" lit. "falling down", c.f. occidere "to slay") is a now antiquated term for the Western world (literally, "the west") as opposed to "orient" (also considered antiquated for Eastern world). Cf., e.g., Occidental Petroleum ("oil from the west") and the French violent far-right political group Occident self-identifying as "westerners".
