It has been used for the filming location of the All Creatures Great and Small, Brideshead Revisited, Poirot and Sherlock Holmes television series.

Newton Dale Halt is a walkers' request stop. There are excellent walks and beautiful scenery.

Goathland railway station has been the location for Aidensfield in the Yorkshire TV series Heartbeat and its station was used as Hogsmeade station in the Harry Potter films. The station has a newly refurbished Goods Waggon Tea Room.

Grosmont railway station is the terminus, and houses the locomotive sheds. It has been restored to the British Railways style of the 1960s. The line connects with the Esk Valley Line from Middlesbrough to Whitby. During the summer, some steam-hauled services extend north of Grosmont to Whitby.
