New York City Police Commissioner

The New York City Police Commissioner is the head of the New York City Police Department, appointed by the Mayor of New York City.

Prior to 1901, the NYPD was run by a board of 4 to 6 commissioners that jointly ran the department. Future U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt served as a Police Commissioner on the board from 1895 to 1897.
