Maiden

Diminutive of mægð, mægeð maid, from Proto-Germanic *magadinom young womanhood / sexually inexperienced female (cf. Old Scandinavian magath, Old Frisian maged, Old High German magad, German Magd maid/maidservant German Mädchen girl / maid, from Mägdchen little maid), feminine variant of Proto-Indo-European base *maghu- youngster of either sex / unmarried person (cf. Old English magu "child, son," Avestanmagava- unmarried, Old Irish maug slave). [1]

A maiden may refer to:

• A female virgin (though originally it referred to males as well)
• A maiden over in the sport of cricket.
• Maiden, North Carolina is a town in the United States.
• A beheading device, see maiden (beheading).
• The first of the three aspects of the Triple Goddess
• Iron Maiden, a heavy metal band which also greatly influenced what is now known as power metal.
• "new, fresh, first" (for example maiden voyage and maiden speech (also called "first speech")), a figurative sense first recorded 1555.
