Angel Sanctuary (天使禁猟区; Tenshi Kinryoku) is a highly controversial manga and anime, with the manga written by Kaori Yuki. This 20-volumed manga serialized on Hakusensha's Hana to Yume. Both the manga and anime feature mature content.

Story

Setsuna Mudou is a problematic delinquent high school student, who is in love with his sister. To add to his problems, he is also a reincarnation of a fallen angel, which gets him caught in a messy war between heaven and hell.

Angel Sanctuary is one of Kaori Yuki's most celebrated works. Among other things, it discusses the morality of incestuous relationships, the nature of God, and other deep and philosophical topics.

The background story is that of Organic Angel Alexiel, who is one of the third highest beings in existence. Being just under God himself and the primordial man known as Adam Kadamon. She is, in rank, equal to her twin brother the Inorganic Angel Rosiel. Before the beginning of the series God has fallen asleep to "gather his powers" which indicates that he is, in this series, very powerful but not omnipotent.

In this series Assiah (Earth) and the upper levels of Hell (Gehenna) are mirror images of each other. As mankind polluted and destroyed the Earth the lands of Hell also began to weaken. Taking advantage of their creator's slumbering absence and the weakening of their enemies the angels of heaven wage war on the Evil race (a group of beings that are demons who have turned away from the Devil, Lucifer, and God; they live in Gehenna and worship "Holy Dragon Gods"), wiping most of them out.

In doing this the angels fighting the war are corrupt. They commit vile crimes and murders under the name of God and righteousness. This deeply goes against Alexiel's morals. She feels that the Evils are more pure in their actions since they do not put up a charade of purity to cover their crimes. She joins the Evil's side of the war and declares an official revolt against God.

The war comes to a climax and end when Alexiel fights against her brother Rosiel. Earlier, Rosiel had found out that he is decomposing and that his mind will rot. He went to Alexiel to ask her to kill him before he goes crazy, which she agrees to. But when she is about to deal the killing blow to him, he yells "Would you kill your own twin brother, Alexiel!?". She then is filled with pity and remorse, so she seals him within the Earth using a barrier of forbidden magic. However in doing this she used every ounce of her power and shatters Nanatsusaya (the "Holy Sword of God", that made every bearer before Alexiel go mad with its power and kill themseves and countless others). The result is that Rosiel is now sealed inside Assiah and Alexiel is captured and tried by the Angel of Judgment, Uriel.

For her crimes Alexiel is sentenced to the most severe punishment given to the fallen. Her body and Soul are separated. The body is frozen in an angel crystal, it is then locked away in the deepest depths of angel security on the fourth circle/layer of Heaven, Machonon. Her soul is sentenced to be incarnated into a human mortal. That mortal's life is sentenced to end in a violent and painful way at the end of every incarnation. After which Alexiel is re-incarnated again and begins the cycle anew. But in every incarnation Alexiel's personality is still present under specific, e.g. dangerous, circumstances, which causes her incarnation to have strange spiritual patterns and powers at times; it is as if the incarnation has a multiple personality disorder. In the storyline she is incarnated into a boy named Setsuna Mudou.

Humans

Setsuna Mudou(無道刹那 Mudou Setsuna)
The current human incarnation of the Organic Angel, Alexiel. Alexiel retains many of her high astral powers and Setsuna is almost impervious to injury. Like all of Alexiel's reincarnations, Setsuna will be doomed to live a miserable life, tragic love, and die a slow, very painful death. However, the cycle is partially broken when Nanatsusaya kills Alexiel's previous incarnation. It is then completley destroyed when Setsuna's younger sister, Sara, takes the place of his death. He is in love with Sara.

Sakuya Kira(吉良朔夜 Kira Sakuya)
When Sakuya was six years old, he died in a car accident with his mother. However, the spirit of Alexiel's seven-bladed Holy Sword Nanatsusaya saves him. The two make a deal, the spirit of the sword is in control, will grow smart and read lots of books, and Sakuya made the sword promise to make his father hate him so that when Sakuya dies, his father will feel no grief. Within Sakuya resides the soul of the demon Lucifer, which takes on the form of Nanatsusaya. The Sword has followed and protected Alexiel in every one of her lives because he loves her. Later, Lucifer was to reawaken but he retains memories of Kira Sakuya and Nanatsusaya. Despite his attempts to suppress these memories, he still regarded Setsuna as a friend.

Yue Katou(加藤故 Katou Yue)
Sakuya Kira's best friend, killed when Setsuna (under Alexiel's control) is tricked by Rosiel. When he dies, Enra-Ou enlists his help to test (and preferably kill) the Messiah. While he and Setsuna do not get along initially, they become friends and rebel and defeat Enra-Ou. He acts as a guide to Setsuna while he is in Hades and dies in order for them to defeat Enra-Ou. He is then revived and given a new body by Uriel. He was to help Setsuna greatly in his adventures. Initially a source of comic relief, Yue slowly becomes a tragic character, particularly after being grievously hurt by Lucifer. Despite Uriel's attempts to heal him, his body slowly began to decay and his memories also began to fade.

Ruri Saiki(斉木翠雀 Saiki Ruri)
Sara's classamate and best friend. She has a huge crush on Setsuna, though Setsuna considered her old-fashioned (due to her spectacles). She helps reawaken Rosiel through the video game called Angel Sanctuary, and is absorbed by him. In the end, she saves Sara from dying and her soul departs.

Sara Mudou) (無道紗羅 Mudou Sara)
The younger sister of Setsuna Mudou, who is actually the reicarnation of the soul of the former Great Cherub, D'jibril (Gabriel). When Sara dies, her soul is taken up to heaven by Zaphkiel to study its unusual spiritual energy signature. Metatron removes Sevi's needle from the back of D'jibril's neck and Sara's soul awakens in it. She awakens but was blinded by Sevi and remains so until she is healed by D'jibril's water powers and Raphael. She is in love with Setsuna. Her soul was returned to her original body by Raphael, who claims to love her. This is not true, for through Sara, Raphael was to realise that his true love was someone else close to him.

Angels

Alexiel
The Organic Angel Alexiel is the older of the two twin angels. She was loved by the angel Uriel and the demon Lucifer, though she claims the one she loves most is God. In truth, the one she loved most was actually her twin brother, Rosiel; though not in the incestuous way that Sara and Setsuna love each other. She was one of the two highest angels in Heaven and has 3 wings.

Born from Adam Kadamon to love God, Alexiel rebels against him because of the love she has for Rosiel. She is forced to conceal her feelings under the threat that Rosiel would be killed the moment God heard any declarations of love from Alexiel to her brother. She is also sentenced to be confined in Briah, the Angel's Garden (Eden), and forced to eat the fruit of the Tree of Life (which is damning her because it is of her "mother's" flesh and eating another angel is one of God's rules of what not to do).

It is also in Eden where Alexiel and Lucifer first meet. After God had revealed his plan to Lucifer, that Lucifer would start a war against heaven and become evil, Lucifer wanted to take revenge by corrupting and killing God's "beloved" daughter. After speaking with her, he changes his mind however and promises to break her out of Eden, which he later does. This, however leads to the erasing of his memories and imprisonment of his soul into Nanatsusaya, which Alexiel later finds and fights with.

When she seals Rosiel away, she is imprisoned and tried by the High Council for her actions. After lying that the one she loved most was God, Uriel sentences her body to be imprisoned in the angel crystal while her soul is endlessly reincarnated into a human without end; each of her lives are to be miserable and end in a painful death.

She is the first of the creator's attempts to split the powers of the Seraphita.

Rosiel
The Inorganic Angel Rosiel is the younger twin of Alexiel. Originally, he was wise, kind and benevolent, but knew he would eventually lose his sanity and become destructive. He asked Alexiel to kill him before this happened, but her feelings prevented her from doing so and she sealed him within the earth instead. He is also obsessed with his beauty; because everyone calls him beautiful (save for Alexiel), he frequently asks if he is beautiful when he has gone insane. In fact, he clones many of his facial features from Alexiel's, which explains his resemblance to his sister. The reason behind this obsession is because Rosiel was born as an old, hideous creature. His body doesn't age; instead, it becomes younger and younger as time went by. Rosiel's most loyal follower Katan secretly uses forbidden black magic to break the seal and brings Rosiel back. By this time, Rosiel has already lost his mind.

Even with his determination to have Alexiel, he acknowledges on a subconscious level that he loves Katan and occasionally shows this. When he goes mad and accidentally kills Katan, he recovers from his insanity to realize what he's done. He has an awakening similar to the awakening of Alexiel within Setsuna, but on a larger scale. The Angel of Destruction comes to life, but Setsuna (as Alexiel) manages to persuade Rosiel to stop his rampage. He accepts this gratefully, caring only about being with Katan again.

He is the first of the creator's attempts to split the powers of the Seraphita.

Katan
Katan is one of the Cherubim. He was originally a Grigori, but was given a body by Rosiel when he was still sane. In a sense he is Rosiel's son and loves him deeply. He resurrected Rosiel in the hopes that he would take control of Heaven again and end the corrupt dictatorship. Unfortunately for Katan, this plan backfires as Rosiel only cares about having Alexiel tell him that he is pretty. Despite various cruelties and delibrate attempts to make him leave for his own protection, Katan stays, and in the height of his insanity, Rosiel kills him. However, it is hinted that Rosiel later revived him.

Sevothtarte
Heaven's Prime Minister, Sevothtarte, rules while Rosiel is sealed. While he claims he is doing this in the name of God, he is actually pursuing his goals to "purify" Heaven. He is the guardian of the Great Seraphim Metatron, who should really be running Heaven. Sevothtarte is a cold and frightening dictator whose intentions are always hidden. Also, only his eyes can be seen, for he wears a veil and a helm. He's often at odds with Rosiel after the Inorganic Angel's return to Heaven.

It is revealed that he was actually Laila in disguise.(The helm was to hide Laila's cross-shaped scar, while the veil was used to conceal her brand as a fallen angel and a mechanical device which changes her voice to that of a man's.) Laila was an angel scientist who was raped by a band of angels who were jealous of her success, thus trangressing the laws of Heaven. When another angel (Nid Hogg) comes to save her, she wounds him and frames him for the crime. The act made her 'impure' and she was branded a fallen angel and Nid Hogg was sentenced to having his wings cut off. Although she was in love with Zaphkiel, he was with her best friend, Anael, so she could never have him. Before she was found out, Laila believed wholly in the purity of Heaven, and this is why Sevothtarte attempts to purify heaven. After she is branded and disgraced, she sells herself to Sandalphon in order to be reborn into something pure.

Initially, Rosiel, too, had no idea that Sevothtarte was Laila. But through his investigations, he soon finds out Sevothtarte's real identity, along with Sandalphon's hold on Laila. He arranges for Nid hogg's appearance in front of Laila, thus causing her death and the destruction of Sandalphon's body.

Metatron
The Great Seraphim Metatron is a young child who adores Sevothtarte/Laila and calls him Sevy. To him, she is his mother figure, and he has vague memories of her when she sung him to sleep as Laila. His twin brother is Sandalphon, who died at birth. He is the last of the creator's attempts to split the powers of the Seraphita. He has no wings and seemingly no powers... but his twin brother's soul resides inside of him, and the only thing that can stop Sandalphon's evil is Metatron's powers... because that is all he does, for he is the cap and seal of Sandalphon and his powers. To prevent Sandalphon's awakening, Laila had Metatron consume pills. But, due to Sandalphon's trickery, he eventually works his way to take over Metatron's body.

Sandalphon
He is Metatron's younger twin brothter and usually manipulates Metatron's toy rabbit, but his soul resides in Metatron. He is the last of the creator's attempts to split the powers of the Seraphita. When Metatron is removed from Sevothtarte's care, Sandolphon takes advantage of the opportunity and possesses him, revealing his intentions for Laila to be his Mother so that he can have a true, separate body, and sees to raping her. After she died, he posseses Sara and plans for her to be his mother through "virgin" birth. He had millions of various eyes and mouths and has six wings coming from his head. Rosiel's ultimate aim was to adsorb Sandalphon into himself, an act which accelerated his descent into madness. Later, Sara was to force Sandalphon's residual thoughts out of her, an act which surprises YHWH.

Described by Rosiel as a "child tyrant", Sandalphon will do anything to achieve his aims. However, due to his obsession with wanting things to go his way, he is often outsmarted by Rosiel. He is the devourer of nightmares; therefore, all organic creatures are at risk of falling under his sway. However, for all his might, Sandalphon is afraid of the powers of Nanatsusaya. Rosiel uses this fact to his advantage, by delibrately letting Sandalphon escape so that he could control Sara, hence becoming enemies with Setsuna and his gang. With prompting by Lucifer, Setsuna manages to find Sandalphon's weak spot: "the eye which isn't an eye". After being wounded by Setsuna, Sandalphon rushes to settle scores with Rosiel, only to realise that Rosiel had outsmarted him again. With his body adsorbed by the Inorganic Angel, his last hope lies with Sara. But, after the girl purges his residual memories from her head, Sandalphon is utterly destroyed, never to return.

Zaphkiel
Zaphkiel is a high-ranked angel (Chief of the Thrones) and leader of a rebellion group called Anima Mundi, which plans to overthrow Sevothtarte. He fell in love with Anael, and when Sevothtarte found out about their relations, he had Zaphkiel kill Anael. Later, he was sentenced to kill himself, an ordeal which was to leave a deep scar around his neck. He is blinded by Adam Kadamon when the Seraphita appeared to save him. His assistant is Raziel. Initially, Zaphkiel had no idea that Raziel was his son. He is sentenced to have his wings cut off when he is revealed as the leader of the Anima Mundi. Upon Raziel's breaking into his cell to rescue him, he has already degenerated to a ghoul. Just before his death, Adam Kadamon restores his sight and he sees his dead love in his child's face. He then passes his post of leadership to Raziel, who then raised his gun to kill a beserking Zaphkiel.

Anael
Anael was Zaphkiel's lover. She disapproved of his slaughtering of the Ion Children (bastard angel babies), but she fell in love with him anyway. Her best friend is Laila, who (as Sevothtarte) deceives Zaphkiel into killing Anael.

Adam Kadamon
The Holy Hermit, Adam Kadamon, is the only success in God's experiment to create a Seraphita. The Six Winged being who first "gave birth" to Alexiel and Rociel, thus dividing his power between them. (In truth God created them from the body of Adam Kadamon...) And by the end of the story the only physical thing left of him is his Head. (Body made into Alexiel and Rosiel, his "evil" Left Eye was planted and the Tree of Life grew from it.)

Uriel
The Archangel of Earth and Angel of Death, a former member of the Seven Great Angels. His wings are dark brown. He used to love Alexiel and was the one who sentenced her to her gruesome punishment. This made him go slightly mad with grief and he ripped out his vocal cords to attone for the sins he commited against his love. He finds that this is not enough and leaves heaven to live in Hades where his fashions a dragon's body for Nid Hogg and fashions a body for Kyrie's soul when she arrives in Hades. (He was to call her "Doll".) He also created a living-mechanical body for Katou and acts like a father to him later in the story. Later, having sorted out his thoughts, he attaches a mechanical device to his neck, amplifying the vibrations of his throat to form an audible voice.

Michael
The Archangel of Fire, who also holds the title of being the Chief of the Powers. He has a fiery temper and his most distinguishing feature is a tattoo of a dragon going all the way up from his chest to the middle of his face. He hates it when you talk about two things: 1. His height (he's dreadfully short) and 2. His brother... Lucifel. His best friend is Raphael and he rarely ever understands what really is going on (except in battles). He is the second of the creator's attempts to split the powers of the Seraphita. He has two wings. Later, he was to partially forgive his brother, for Lucifer revealed that it was actually Michael who was the true Angel of Light, not Lucifel as most have thought.

Raphael
The Archangel of Wind and Chief of the Virtues. The greatest healer alive and the only one with the power to truly bring back the dead. He is lecherous and agrees to bring Setsuna back to life only if Sara will sleep with him. He eventually thinks that he falls in love with her, but does not pursue her because Sara loves Setsuna. But he comes to realize that his true love is actually Barbiel, his second-in-command. He used up his powers to save her during the Battle of Etenamenki and in return has to go into "hibernation" or "cold sleep" for 10 years.

D'jibril/Jibril/Gabriel
Once the Chief of the Cherubim, D'jibril (ponounce the same as Jibril)was rendered comatose and imprisoned in the Water Garden by Sevothtarte. Her soul was forced to be Alexiel's guardian angel but was the forced to reincarnate into Sara Mudou because Sevothtarte saw her as an obstacle in his path to absolute power. She is the Archangel of Water and is know to humans (as Raphael says) as Gabriel.

Dobbiel
Temporarily acts in D'jibril's stead as the Chief of the Cherubim, beacuse he was the second-in-command to D'jibril. He is now nothing more than Sevothtarte`s pawn, and when he attempts to assassinate Rosiel, he almost dies and gets turned into one of Rosiel's mindless puppets. Later, when Rosiel starts to lose his sanity, Dobbiel was to break down into useless parts.

Sariel
The Chief of the Principalities - in charge of the "Mid-Air Corridor" (which is between the 4th and 5th levels of Heaven and is where fallen angels are imprisoned). He was killed by Zaphkiel when Zaphkiel, despite going insane and becoming a ghoul, manages to regain control of himself and pierces Sariel's eye. (He is immune to the powers of Sariel's eye due to his blindness.) He has an Evil Eye, who can kill beings of lesser will outright, or control the bodies of others.

Barbiel
The second-in-command to Rapheal. While she was initially a motherly/sisterly figure to Raphael, she later becomes his lover. She is almost killed trying to save Raphael, but he uses up much of his powers to save her, rendering him unconscious.

Kirie
A former candidate for the "Archangels Think Tank" and loves Rosiel because she thinks he is the only one who deserves her love and because he is so pretty. Kirie comes down on Earth to help Rosiel kill Sara. She is killed in the blast of energy when Setsuna awakens as the Messiah/Alexiel and destroys the world after Sara is killed.

Raziel
A candidate for "Archangels' Think Tank" who is working under Zaphkiel. He is given a job to survey the slums in heaven and there he meets Sheatiel and falls in love with her. He begs Sevothtarte to help her and all the Ion Children in the slums, and Sevi agrees. But, all the food and toys he gave Raziel to give to Sheatiel and the Ions were really bombs. He has no idea that he is Zaphkiel's son. When Zaphkiel dies, he takes over the Anima Mundi. As leader, he tries to form an alliance with the forces of Hell against Rosiel, but this offer was rejected outright by Belial.

Moonlily
A former grigori that was turned into a "Sister" by Sevothtarte to take care of Sara after awakening in D'jibril's body. (Some Sisters have their minds suppressed so that they will not disobey any orders of their masters and Moonlily is one of them. She could be considered mentally handicapped and she has the mind of a six year old). Initially she was only called "Sister" until she brings Sara a bouquet of Moonlilies, she remarks that they are her favorite. So Sara names her Moonlily after the flower and Moonlily has since nicknamed herself "Lily-chan" as a result. When Sara (as D'jibirl) excapes before her trial, Sevothtarte torture Moonlily to bring Sara back because he knows that she would feel guilty about the harm that comes to Moonlily beacuse of her.

Teialiel/Teial
An angel who can read minds. She ate a dead angel's flesh so that she wouldn't die of starvation upon the angel's urging, and thus was condemned as fallen. She was taken to Katan by Rosiel to be eaten, but instead befriends him after she tells him that she also has eaten angel flesh. She is killed during Dobbiel's assassination attempt on Rosiel.

Sheatiel
A one winged angel. Because of her deformity, she does not "fit in" with the pure, holy angels in the upper heavens, so she stays with the bastard children to watch over them and protect the little ones. She lives in the slums of Heaven, where she meets Raziel. She falls in love with Raziel, and he brings her a necklace when he brings all the food and toys for the Ion children. She is killed by the bombs and her head is blown off her body beacause the necklace was also a bomb. She is buried by Raziel before the "clean-up crew" comes to get rid of the organic waste.

Demons

Kurai(九雷)
The last princess of the Gehennan Royal Family, and believes herself to be the only survivor of her family. She is master of the Shinryuu, three dragon oracles and varous dragon "gods" who protect Gehenna. The master is declared heir to Gehenna's throne, regardless of the fact that Kurai had older brothers who could have inherit the throne instead. She believes Arachne is her cousin, though in truth he is her older brother. Kurai is in love with Alexiel for saving her and helping her kingdom in the war against Heaven. She later loves Setsuna. After Setsuna's return to Earth, she resolved to be a good queen to her people.

Arachne(紫羅九音 Arakune) (real name unknown)
Arachne is actually Kurai's older brother and was told that he was heir to the throne. When Gehenna was attacked and destroyed, he discovers that he was only a decoy to protect the true heir, Kurai. He initially despises her and sells his soul to Lucifer through the Mad Hatter... who seals a spider demon in his chest. He then poses as her gay, crossdressing cousin to get close to her and kill her, but grows to genuinely care for her. He sacrifices himself to be the 999th bride of The Demon Lord to save her.

Prince Abaddon
"Possesses huge sickle-like wings and green scales cover his enormous body with a tail like a dragon." It is said that all who look at Prince Abaddon die instantly. Kurai was one of those exceptions, and Abaddon was to acknowledge her as his "mother". He is of noble blood, but he was chained in the deepest dungeon in Hell under the care of Astaroth when Lucifer's soul disappeared. He escapes and crashes Kurai's wedding to Lucifer and dies protecting her.

Mad Hatter (Beliel)
One of the Seven Satans, "Pride", and the Court Jester of the lowest layer of Hell, Sheol. Her real name is Beliel, and was formerly a member of the order of Virtues and the deputy of Raphael. (She was the reason why Raphael disliked women, due to her ways.) The Mad Hatter searches and chooses Lucifer's brides, because she loves Lucifer herself. BUT she does NOT longs for him to love her back because if he does she will hate him. She (like all angel) was born sexless, but when her gender started to manifest she took pills to stop it so that she could be the best of what God had intended for her to be... Worthless. She has a tattoo of a butterfly on her upper-thigh. She also has a habit of taunting Setsuna and his friends, particularly Sakuya, for he has another identity which he doesn't know: Lucifer, Ruler of the 9 Hells. Later, after Setsuna's destruction of YHWH, she was to withdraw the forces of Hell away from Heaven, thus forming a truce between the two realms.

Astoreth (Astaroth & Astarte)
One of the Seven Satans, "Sloth", and formerly a member of Thrones. He (Astaroth) has his sister (Astarte)'s soul inside of him, because he is an attempt to create another Adam Kadamon, this drives him slowly insane and makes him cruel. He is Prince Abaddon's caretaker when Lucifer's soul disappears. Later, when Abaddon fatally injures Astarte, she separated her body from her brother's, thus saving him. Though Astoreth claims not to be grateful for this act, he still wept when Belial tells him to "mourn for his sister".

Asmodeus
One of the Seven Satans, "Lust", formerly a member of the Cherubim. He is in love with the Mad Hatter, and frequently tries to convince her to overthrow Lucifer with him. He has three heads. They are that of a human, a bull, and a lamb. Asmodeus is a notable womanizer and helps get Setsuna (in the body of Alexiel) to Kurai and Lucifer's wedding to annoy the Mad Hatter.

Mammon
One of the Seven Satans, the Golden Count, "Avarice", formerly a member of the Angels. He was constanty staring down at heaven's golden roads, that is why he was cast out. Mammon has the head of a raven, and he sometimes takes that form. He is not seen in the manga storyline.

Beelzebub
One of the Seven Satans, Lord of Flies, "Gluttony", formerly a member of the Seraphim. He is not seen in the manga storyline.

Leviathan
The Seven Satan of "Envy". He was once an angel who shead his angel-hood and don the cloth of a great sea-dragon. The Leviathan never makes dealings with any of the other Satans because he has reverted to believing himself to be a dragon and therefor acts like one. He is not seen in the manga storyline.

Lucifer
The Demon Lord of Hell, his angelic name is Lucifel. When he and his comrades fell, they found that hell was a barren land incapable of supporting life of any kind so he rooted his body to Hell's ground. Thus when Hell's earth breaks, it is his blood that gushes out. He is in love with Alexiel and his soul currently is in Nanatsusaya which resides in Sakuya Kira. When Rosiel destroyed Kira Sakuya's body, Lucifer was reawakened. Dwelling in a body remade for him by Rosiel, Lucifer then pretended to be a mindless guard under Rosiel's control. He was to help Setsuna defeat YHWH.

Barbelo
One of the Seven Satans, "Wrath", she is Lucifer's first wife and mother of many demons and Abbadon. Barbelo was once an angel in Heaven named 'Baal'. She watched over Lucifer(Lucifel) and Michael when Lucifer still resided in Heaven. During the First Great War, she forced Michael to take her to the battlefield so she could see the fight for herself and that it was really Lucifer leading the army. When Michael went to attack Lucifer, she got in the way and was cut down by Michael's sword. After the fight, Lucifer saved her life and made her the Satan of Wrath. However, she retains memories of her life as an angel, as well as a scar where Michael had injured her. Initially, Michael did not know that she survived his blow. But as Lucifer started dropping hints to him, Michael finally figured out who she was. He then struck her down a second time, as she was holding onto Setsuna's leg to prevent him from escaping.

Other

Nid Hogg
He was a scientist alongside Laila & Anael. He fell in love with Laila; and his love for her never wavered, even when she accused him of being one of her rapists. He has his wings cut off, and when Uriel flees to hell, he takes pity on Nid Hogg and fasions him a body like that of a dragon to ferry him around Hades. He asks Setsuna to find Laila and give her one of his scales, as well as the message that he forgives her for what she did to him because he always loved her. (The scale later changed into a musical box of sorts, with Laila's beautiful voice recorded as she sings.) After the journey, Nid hogg's wishes are fufilled (by him appearing before Laila... in ghost form) and Laila ends up jumping out of a window to fly to him, but her astral powers were limited so she just plunges to her death and happiness.

Enra-Ou
A being who is the composite of every living human to ever had died. He rules over Hades as Lucifer and God rule over Hell and Heaven respectively. He tests the Savior (Setsuna) and with that test he loses most of his contained souls. He employed Katou to kill Setsuna and take his astral powers during this test.

YHWH
A being from somewhere else. He has no real physical form... but resides in Etamenanki in the form of a giant computer-robot. The whole universe was created just to test an equation that he had fashioned. He created Adam Kadamon in order for Adam Kadamon to step-in whenever he (God) was "sleeping".

In the end he is defeated by Setsuna with the help of Lucifer.
